Since 2003 I have been a network manager in a school in Portsmouth. When looking at the mobile environment for education, I couldn’t find an app that not only helped me manage the network of devices but also allowed the children in the school to Learn and Engage as a class or in small sets. So I wrote an android app called eduDroid which is currently free on the play store. We now have 80 devices across the school and are looking to extend.
eduDroid is aimed at children aged between 4 to 11 years old and promotes the learning and development of essential numeracy and literacy skills as directed by the national curriculum. Parents can download it now from the Play store for FREE.
Do you want your child to improve their literacy or numeracy skills? Each of eduDroid’s modules are targeted to specific learning levels so that you can pick the level best suited to them or the level they are working towards in school.
Literacy modules include:
‧ Spelling Bee
‧ Learning and Handwriting Letters
‧ Learning Phonics
‧ Writing and Spelling Quizzes
‧ Precision Teaching
Numeracy modules include:
‧ Numeracy Maze
‧ Numeracy Quiz
‧ Alien and Bond Shooter interactive games
‧ Hundreds Tens and Units
‧ Money Counting
‧ Timer/Stopwatch
All of the content is up-to-date with the latest standards and is sure to making learning fun, engaging and accessible.
Schools can utilize the extensive variety of pre-programmed content within eduDroid modules or allow teachers to customize settings and create their own learning-based content including: games, stories, flashcards and interactive classroom voting polls. Why not try out the following facilities?
Create Links to websites and share these instantly with you class. eduDroid, unlike other educational software, does not exclude accessing learning content from other sources but instead encourages children to adopt a broader style of learning and play through directed browsing. Now children can use the internet in a safe and controlled environment.
Share a spelling list or quiz with your class. You can choose from a pre-programmed one or create your own. The content is directed at specific levels of learning, as defined by the curriculum, to aid children who may struggle to catch up or promote those who find their work too easy. Create your own word lists for specific curriculum topics or themes to make learning more focussed.
Turn On the Voting Pad to get instant feedback from your class. This activity encourages children to participate and answer questions without feeling scrutinised or under pressure. Teachers can quickly scan the answers using eduDroid’s adult mode and provide targeted help to those children who need it.
Differentiate specific modules to allow children to engage with content at their level. This could include changing the amount of random letters in Spelling Bee or turning off auto-advance to allow 1 to 1 working with a child who has SEND. eduDroid is designed to help push your child to the next level.
Interact with non-fiction and fiction e-books. Make reading more fun by introducing interactive e-books written especially to cover topics in the national curriculum. The e-books contain web-page links to interesting facts; or customize stories to engage children with topics and facts of your own. Why not ask the children to read aloud and record themselves to inspire their creativity?
Recording children used to be awkward and expensive requiring microphones, recorders and computers. Now, with eduDroid it’s cheap and simple; just tap the button to start and tap again to stop! Schools can assign save areas within their current IT infrastructure so that children can name and save files for instant playback or easy-to-retrieve access at a later date.
Integrate tablets and educational software into more than just a one-off FUN lesson. Both teachers and parents can now use mobile devices in every lesson AND at home to promote learning with continuity.
Printing from mobile devices within schools is made easy with eduDroid. We have developed the facility to send documents and images to a central network printer from the device. Why not get the children to take screenshots of their work for records of their learning and development?
Setting up in schools is cost-effective and easy to maintain. The application has been designed to run on all android versions and on all tablets or phones, of any shape and size. Schools and teachers of all IT abilities can follow our step-by-step instructions on setting-up eduDroid, available on the website. Device management is made simple with self-updating software directly from your school server to avoid individual device upgrades.
