The Fall of Fame team has been selected to design and implement their experiment in microgravity during the next campaign to drop your thesis of ESA, scheduled for 4-15 November 2013.
Over the past five years the thesis your Drop! program gave some master's or doctoral students the opportunity to develop - in the context of their thesis - an experience to realize during a series of launches to Tower fall ZARM in Bremen, Germany.
Following a call for proposals in October 2012, an expert group of the Office of studies of ESA, Direction manned flights of ESA and operations, ZARM-FABmbH and ELGRA (European Low Gravity Research Association) selected Fall of Fame from the list of entries.
The Fall of Fame team is composed of four students of Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nurnberg, Germany. They proposed an experiment to clarify the mechanism of formation of band that occurs in shallow, granular, layers when they are subjected to horizontal vibration. This effect has been known for 20 years, but it still lacks a definitive explanation.
Based on numerical simulations and experiments in normal gravity, the team expects striped patterns to appear within 3 seconds approximately and is fully deployed after approximately 6 seconds. Students believe that microgravity ZARM facilities will provide an ideal environment to study how granular stripe formation is influenced by gravity disruptive action.
During the preparation of their experience, the student team will be supported by the Rector of the ESA and ZARM engineers. Member of the Association de recherche gravity low European (ELGRA) will be also on-site to provide advice and expertise in research related to gravity.
The first week of the campaign will be devoted to the integration and testing of the experience, followed by the series of five tests of microgravity during the second week of the Earth.
To improve the educational benefits of this successful practice program, deposit your thesis! will be open to all students of the University, including singles from 2014.
The fall of your thesis! University students program provides the opportunity to realize their own scientific experiment in microgravity conditions, as part of their master's thesis, thesis PhD or research programs, participating in a campaign sponsored by ESA to operate fall tower installation the ZARM Center of Applied Space Technology and microgravity in Bremen, in Germany.
